About Crayligraphy

A little clarificraytion if you will...

Crayligraphy was founded in the Summer of 2015 by Colin Tierney in Baltimore, Maryland. Originally dubbed ‘Crayoligraphy’ and later changed—omitting that pesky little ‘o’—Crayligraphy (Crazy + calligraphy) was a way for Colin to share his love of the art and to teach people everything he knew about writing with intention in the most efficient way possible—through a magic marker.

As the interest grew, Colin realized Crayligraphy was bigger than what he initially set out for it to be. Thus, Colin began to write in depth tutorials and hosted workshops to deliver helpful content for anyone interested in learning the the world.

Natalie Downey

Craytive Director 😐

Natalie is a calligraphy & lettering artist currently living in the Baltimore area working as a freelance graphic designer. Natalie’s journey into calligraphy started 4 years ago, when it began as a hobby, and has since led her to being able to utilize the skillset for client work and teaching.

Together, we are building a platform to help people elevate their skills in lettering and calligraphy. We promote the passion behind penmanship and keep it alive through celebrating artists and their work. Our hope with Crayligraphy is to provide encouragement and keep the traditional form of intentional writing alive, by making it fun for all to learn.

Nostalgia is enough to evoke your curiosity in creating really cool letters with a marker. Never mind the untraditional manner in doing so—calligraphy with a marker is far less intimidating than a brush pen. Plus, markers are cheap, easily accessible and most of all, fun!

Your interest might make you hastily search for a pen that you've seen skilled calligraphers use, tricking you into thinking that their pen could potentially make your learning experience easier. Perhaps you've asked the infamous “what pen is that?” question, only to have it drown in a pool of unanswered hopelessness. While picking a marker out of a lineup full of prestigious pens may be simple—I've got some news for you:

The tools absolutely do not make the craftsman.

The work that you envy from the artists you love, have sacrificed thousands of hours of deliberate practice to be able to hone their craft and create beautiful pieces of art.

Now it’s time for you to showcase the skills you admire in your own unique style.

We want to help you get to that next level. We want to inspire you to be your best artist. We want you to put in the effort that it takes to become as good—if not better—than your idol. By signing up to The Craymunity Newsletter, we’ll provide detailed material to reference and relatable experiences—the good and the bad—that Colin went through as a beginner, to help motivate and keep you on track to fulfilling your goals.

Crayligraphy will help you reach these goals.
